Classes & Courses

NRC Education Programs

The Newport Rifle Club offers various classes on firearms safety, introduction to firearms, gun care and cleaning, and marksmanship. The NRC also hosts ladies-only basic and advanced pistol safety courses. NRA Certified Instructors are available for 1-on-1 coaching.

NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting

Intended for all individuals regardless of previous experience or NRA affiliation. Course topics include:

  • Gun safety rules
  • Operation of revolvers & semi-automatic pistols
  • Ammunition knowledge and selection
  • Pistol selection and storage
  • Shooting fundamentals
  • Pistol inspection and maintenance
  • Marksmanship and range safety

Includes live fire training and a nationally standardized shooting qualification with an NRA Certified Instructor.

NRA Basics of Rifle Shooting

At least eight hours of classroom and range time. Students learn:

  • NRA safe gun handling rules
  • Rifle parts and operation
  • Ammunition fundamentals
  • Shooting fundamentals and range rules
  • Shooting from bench rest, prone, sitting, standing, and kneeling positions
  • Cleaning and maintenance

Students receive the Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook and a course completion certificate.

NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO)

A nine-hour course conducted in classroom and range settings. Topics covered:

  • Roles and responsibilities of an RSO
  • Range Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Range inspection and range rules
  • Range briefings and emergency procedures
  • Firearm stoppages and malfunctions

Candidates receive an RSO Student Study Guide, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, and course evaluation form.

USCCA Fundamentals of Concealed Carry

Provides a solid foundation for those considering or possessing a concealed carry permit, or those who own a firearm for personal defense. Covers responsible carry practices and safe storage.

Utah Non-Resident CFP Course

Although Rhode Island is now a Constitutional Carry state, Utah issues non-resident permits honored by up to 31 other states. This course was developed by the Utah Department of Public Safety and is required prior to CFP issuance. Contact us to set up a session.

Personal Safety / Crime Awareness

Strategies people can integrate into everyday life to avoid becoming a victim of crime. A complete seminar may run four to five hours; a modified version can cover essentials in one to two hours. Contact NRC for scheduling options.

Youth Program

Beginning Youth .22 Rifle

Open to youths ages 8–16, accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Each session begins with a range safety brief to ensure all shooters are aware of firearm and range safety principles.

First-time shooters also view a firearms orientation and safety video prior to entering the range. All shooting is done in the prone position using supported .22 target rifles.

Each one or two shooters is supervised by a dedicated coach who provides instruction tailored to each shooter and monitors for safe procedure throughout the session.

Youth Program Details

Ages: 8–16

Requirement: Must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian

Firearm: Supported .22 target rifles (provided)
