PISTOL COMPETITIONS

Ocean State Pistol League

The Ocean State Pistol League consists of 11 teams from different Rhode Island gun clubs. Dual matches are held each Wednesday evening from mid-September until mid-March. OSPL matches are conducted with .22 caliber pistols shooting the National Match Course of fire:

  • Slow Fire: 10 shots in 10 minutes
  • Timed Fire: 10 shots in two strings of 5, 20 seconds per string
  • Rapid Fire: 10 shots in two strings of 5, 10 seconds per string

The top 5 scores for each club count as team scores.

Practical Pistol

Monthly action pistol matches using modified IDPA rules. Practical Pistol matches are the only opportunity at NRC to draw and fire from a holster, under supervision of a safety officer. Scoring is based upon accuracy, elapsed time and observation of safety procedures.

Winter In-House League

The internal league competition is held for 10 weeks between January and March. Each competitor shoots 10 targets per discipline, doing so as their individual schedules permit. Disciplines include rimfire pistol, centerfire pistol and rimfire rifle.

RIFLE COMPETITIONS

Rhode Island High Power League

The RIHPL consists of teams from various Rhode Island area clubs competing using NRA’s High Power National Match rules. Matches are held at Copicut Rifle Association, South County Rod & Gun Club and Wallum Lake Rod & Gun Club monthly from May through October. Each match is a 41-shot course of fire at ranges between 200 and 300 yards:

  • Offhand: 10 shots in 10 minutes
  • Rapid Seated: 10 shots in 70 seconds with a mandatory magazine change
  • Rapid Prone: 10 shots at 300 yards in 60 seconds with a mandatory magazine change
  • Slow Prone: 22 shots at 300 yards (on reduced 600 yard target) in 22 minutes

CMP Matches

Monthly matches held from April through October using U.S. service rifles (M1903, M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M1A, AR15). Competitors MUST be qualified on the outdoor range. Each match is a 41-shot course of fire:

  • Offhand: 10 shots in 10 minutes
  • Rapid Seated: 10 shots in 70 seconds with a mandatory magazine change
  • Rapid Prone: 10 shots on a reduced 300 yard target in 60 seconds with a mandatory magazine change
  • Slow Prone: 11 shots on a reduced 600 yard target in 11 minutes

Sporting Rifle Matches

Monthly matches held from April through October using sporting/hunting rifles capable of holding 4 rounds. Competitors MUST be qualified on the outdoor range. Each match is a 32-shot course of fire:

  • Offhand: 8 shots in 8 minutes
  • Slow Seated: 8 shots in 8 minutes
  • Rapid Prone: 8 shots in two 4 shot strings, 35 seconds per string
  • Slow Prone: 8 shots in 8 minutes

Rifles of the Snow

Monthly matches held from November through March using as-issued military bolt-action rifles (i.e., M1903, Enfield, Mauser, K31, Mosin Nagant). Competitors MUST be qualified on the outdoor range. Each match is a 40-shot course of fire:

  • Offhand: 10 shots in 10 minutes
  • Slow Seated: 10 shots in 10 miutes
  • Rapid Prone: 10 shots in two 5 shot strings, 35 seconds per string
  • Slow Prone: 10 shots in 10 minutes

Sunday Service Rifle

Monthly matches held from November through March using U.S. service rifles (M1903, M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M1A, AR15). Competitors MUST be qualified on the outdoor range. Each match is a 40-shot course of fire:

  • Offhand: 10 shots in 10 minutes
  • Rapid Seated: 10 shots in 70 seconds with a mandatory magazine change
  • Rapid Prone: 10 shots in 60 seconds with a mandatory magazine change
  • Slow Prone: 10 shots t in 10 minutes

Battle of the Bulge Match

Annual rifle match held in December to commemorate World War II’s Battle of the Bulge, using any rifle that would have been found in that area during that period (surprisingly, there were Swedish Mausers involved).. Competitors MUST be qualified on the outdoor range. Each match is a 31-shot course of fire:

  • Offhand: 10 shots in 10 minutes on two reduced silhouettes at 50 yards
  • Rapid Prone: 10 shots in 60 seconds on reduced silhouette at 100 yards with a mandatory magazine change
  • Slow Prone: 10 shots in 10 minutes on reduced silhouette at 100 yards
  • Bonus shot: Single prone shot at a tank silhouette at 100 yards. Closest hit to the center of the tank wins a prize

Muzzleloading Matches

Monthly matches held on the outdoor range. Shootes MUST be qualified to shoot muzzleloaders on the outdoor range. Matches vary between hunters’ walks and formal target shoots. Any muzzleloading rifle or pistol may be used.
